WORKING WITH CHILDREN
Frequently Asked Questions
What age groups do you work with?
I work with children and young people who are aged 10 and above.

How long and how often are the sessions?
Art psychotherapy sessions are usually weekly and last 50 minutes or shorter if your child becomes too tired or overwhelmed.

How many sessions?
The total number of sessions a child receives varies greatly. Depending on their difficulties and through discussion we can decide together on an initial programme with a set number of sessions. We will then review how things are going together by focusing on progress and any changes in their goals for therapy. Ending therapy occurs once their initial difficulties have been overcome or are being adequately managed at home and/or school. If you and your child want to come and meet me and see the therapy space in person before proceeding I am very happy to accommodate this.
How might art psychotherapy help my child?
Art psychotherapy can help children and young people in many ways. Without the need for verbal communication, art psychotherapy enables children to process situations that have happened to them, helps them understand strong emotions and facilitates self-expression. It also builds self-esteem, and reduces stress and anxiety.
When can art psychotherapy make a difference?
Recognising when children or young people are experiencing emotional difficulties is really important. Providing therapeutic support and other psychoeducation as early as possible can help them grow into stronger, more resilient and confident young adults. Providing them with space for them to reflect on their thoughts and feelings will stand them in good stead for adult life.
What is my role as a parent or carer?
Therapy is an investment in the emotional wellbeing of a child or young person. It is important to me that as a parent or carer you feel involved in the process and feel able to provide feedback. I meet regularly with parents and carers to review progress and answer any questions or address any ongoing concerns. For younger children this is fundamental. I also offer review sessions with you and your young person if they agree.
